As I beheld the grand and ancient tale of Daphne's transformation, my soul was stirred and I felt a burning desire to capture its magnificence in a painting. The myth of Apollo and Daphne, as retold by Ovid in "The Metamorphoses," and the Gnostic tradition of "The Hypostasis of the Archons" filled me with a sense of awe and reverence.
In my artwork, I sought to depict the timelessness and grandeur of these stories, offering a vivid representation of the mystical and divine. The transformation of Daphne, daughter of the river god Peneus, into a Laurel tree is a tale of powerlessness and the reclaiming of one's will and identity.
I chose to portray Daphne with a happy expression, rather than the more typical frightened one, in order to convey her power and wit in the face of oppression. The light in my painting can be seen as a symbol of both Apollo, the oppressive force, and the light of life, a creative and beneficial force.
Through this artwork, I sought to explore the themes of transformation and the reclaiming of one's identity, as well as the power we have to outsmart and trick those who seek to dominate us. It is my hope that this painting will inspire others to continue to assert their own self-determination and sovereignty.
